Student finance 2025: what you need to know
A big shakeup of the student loan system will see many new undergraduates in England paying much more for their university education.
Find out what the changes are and how they will affect you.
If you started university for the first time this autumn and took out a student loan to help pay for it, you will have to begin repaying that loan sooner and over a longer period of time than has been the case until recently.
Under the new ‘Plan 5’ system, launched in September 2023 for higher education students in England, interest will also accrue at a lower rate, using just the level of RPI inflation rather than RPI plus 3%.
However, graduates under this system are expected to repay about twice as much over their lifetimes compared to those with older loans.
Tuition fees are also rising.
English universities can charge full-time undergraduates up to £9,535 a year in tuition fees from the 2025/26 academic year, although maintenance loans are also rising by 3.1%.
